Animal Control: Raccoons

Raccoons has been forced to live in an urban environment, so they have adapted to our way of living. These pests are commonly dealt with when it comes to them taking up residence in your home or building. The shelter and adequate food supply they find will keep them wanting to stay.

Raccoons look for easy access into your home where they will make their nest. These nuisance pests are extremely smart and have learned that buildings with garbage cans or dumpsters are great locations to live for their adequate food source. Any weak part of the structure of your home is where they will tear up and chew their way in. They are able to squeeze through the smallest of holes, they can rip open siding with their strong human like hands, and they can chew through wiring with their razor sharp teeth. The damage these pests can do can be in the thousands of dollars.

Raccoons just don't cause damage to your home, they can also spread diseases like roundworm and leptospirosis. They're a host for parasites as in fleas, ticks and mites. Theses nuisance pests are one of the most destructive wildlife animal and the sooner the root problem is addressed the less the damage will end up costing you.

Here are some tips to help keep raccoons out of your building:

1. Take away their food source. Keep pet food in plastic containers which is hard to smell outside the container. Make sure the outside garbage can's lid is tightly on the can and hard to get off even when knocked over.

2. They don't like to be in the spot light. Raccoons like quiet, so installing a motion detection spot light on the outside of the building will scare them off.

3. Check the outside of your building to see if there are any entry points which a raccoon can squeeze through to enter. This animal can squeeze through a 4' inch diameter hole. Any holes that you find, seal it up to ensure any animal can not squeeze through.

If you notice evidence that you have a raccoon or hear any noises in your attic, give Elite Wildlife Removal a call at 804-867-7184. We do a thorough inspection to determine the entry locations, seal up those entry points, and work with you through a remediation process to clean up their mess.
