That Sly Ole Fox

April 19, 2018

I'm sure you heard the old saying, "the sly ole fox".

I remember hearing my grandfather say it when I was a little girl and I always thought what he meant. As I became older, my grandfather would take me to a farm where he would allow me to feed the chickens. However, we always counted how many there were when they came out to eat the corn we threw. Those chickens got less and less in number due to a fox that was around killing them.

The red fox is the most common fox seen within this area which has a dog like appearance. They are most active during the early hours of darkness and very early morning hours.  You can see them move around the day when it's a dark overcast about.

While foxes roam around, they can cause serious problems for poultry farms. Foxes usually attack the throat of young livestock; therefore, kill them by their multiple bites. They eat poultry, pig, deer, rabbits, mice, bird eggs and insects. The damage foxes do to hen houses, fences, and other animal's buildings to get to their kill costs farms and farmers a good deal of money to replace the building materials and also their livestock. How do you think that affects the consumer?

Foxes also carry diseases and parasites like dog mange and rabies plus they have been known to kill small children. Children love to play outside exploring nearby woods and trees never knowing a fox's den is close, so the animal goes into protection mode. Unfortunately, the child gets bitten which could end in death.

If you see a fox or a fox's den on your property, give Elite Wildlife Removal a call at 804-867-7184.  We will conduct a thorough inspection to trap the animal and remove it off your property.
