Characteristics
 

In North America, grey squirrels are most commonly found. They grow up to 20 inches long; however, their tail adds an extra 9.5 inches. They can usually weigh up to 1.5 lbs. They are omnivores which means they will eat plants, meat, and average 1 lb of food a week. They have padded feet that cushions their jumps and can also run up to 20 mph. Squirrel’s eyes are actually high on their head so they can see a large amount of their surroundings without turning their head.

Entry Areas

Squirrels can use many entry areas around your home to claim the space for its home. They only need 1 ½ inches in diameter to enter. They can chew through shingles, aluminum and wood siding. These areas can include:

  • Attic fans

  • Soffits

  • Ridge vents

  • Chimneys

  • Holes in the roof

Concerns
 

Squirrels love to chew. They have been known to start house fires because they chew through the wires which causes them to spark. The area they inhabit, they leave their urine and feces all over which causes odors throughout the building. Squirrels also carry parasites that can be transferred to humans and pets.

Social Structure

Mother squirrels are the most vicious when protecting their babies.  Their gestation period can last up to 65 days and can give birth up to 8 offspring (kit) at a time. Their kits are born blind and depend on their mother for around 3 months.
