President's Day Facts


An American holiday, President's Day, was established in 1885 recognizing President George Washington. This holiday became popular after it was part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1971. The Act was an attempt to create more three day weekends for the workers within the nation. Here are some more facts for President's Day.

1. The day is viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents regarding past, present and future.

2. In 1800 is when the day began following the death of George Washington.

3. The holiday was only for the District of Columbia; however, in 1885 it expanded to the whole country.

4. Retail stores jumped at the opportunity to have three day weekend sales to boost advertising and money gain.

5. President's Day is seen as a day to recognize the lives and achievements of all America's chief executives.

6. The holiday gained special meeting during the Great Depression.

7. In 1932, the date was used to reinstate the Purple Heart which is a military decoration originally created by George Washington to honor soldiers killed or wounded while service the U.S. armed forces.

8. A number of states require their public schools spend days prior to President's Day by teaching them about the accomplishments of the U.S. presidents.

9. The holiday is celebrated on the third Monday in February.
