Social Structure
There are 24 species of birds that live in the northeastern US. Most of these species of birds are non-migrating. Birds like to select their location for nesting based on the amount of foot traffic that is around.
Females choose their mates based on their overall quality. Males will attract females with the way the build their nest, bringing food, singing and calling. Birds can lay their eggs in April through September, depending on the species of bird. The make their nests out of grass, mud, leaves, plastic, yarn, or fur. The female will lay the eggs after mating and sit on them to incubate at the right temperature for development. They can lay a range of eggs as high as 20 and can last around 23 days.
Entry Areas
Birds can use many entry areas around your home. The most common is in the dryer, kitchen, bathroom vent and chimney.
Concerns
Depending on the area the bird uses to build their nest, there have been reported house fires. These nests are highly flammable which can ignite in a dryer vent, kitchen vent, and chimney. Birds also carry mites and fleas that can be transferred inside your home.
